How the required SIP builds the corpus

How it works

Retirement planning starts from what you spend today. Inflation quietly raises that bill every year: at 6% inflation, ₹50,000 of monthly expenses today becomes about ₹1.6 lakh a month in 20 years. Your corpus must fund that inflated spending for every year of retirement — which is why the required corpus often surprises people.

Corpus = inflated monthly expenses, funded year after year, discounted at your post-retirement return

This calculator first grows today's monthly expenses at your inflation rate up to retirement. It then works out the corpus that can pay those (still inflating) expenses from retirement till your chosen planning age, assuming your money earns the post-retirement return you set — retirees usually invest more conservatively, hence a lower rate. Finally, it converts that corpus into the monthly SIP needed, growing at your pre-retirement return.

Run it once a year and after every salary jump. Starting five years earlier, or stepping up your SIP annually, usually beats trying to save a much larger amount later.

Frequently asked questions

Two forces compound against you: inflation raises your expenses every year before and after retirement, and retirement itself can last 25–30 years. A corpus of 25–30 times annual expenses at retirement is a common planning outcome, not an error.
India's consumer inflation has averaged around 5–6% long-term, but household inflation (education, healthcare, domestic help) often runs higher. Using 6% is a reasonable, slightly cautious default.
This calculator shows the full requirement from your expenses. If you already have EPF/NPS/savings earmarked for retirement, subtract their expected value at retirement from the corpus — your required SIP will fall accordingly. Talk to us and we will factor them in.
